Batman Begins

I decided I had to see Batman Begins since everyone was talking about. It’s a good movie, and definitely better than all the rest of the Batman movies, and Christian Bale does a good job playing his part. Also extra entertaining to see supporting actors like Liam Neeson, Michael Caine and Gary Oldman.

However, Katie Holmes… I’m sorry to say this, but I’ve never liked her looks, her acting or her personality. She doesn’t wreck this movie, but to take her serious as a district attorney… Come on. She looks like a kid playing grown-up. And what Tom Cruise sees in her is really beyond me (yes, they are a couple).

Anyway, it’s a very good move. Make sure you see it!

  • I liked your short thoughts on the movies up until this one. Katie Holmes is cute, kthx? πŸ˜‰

It was a nice movie though. Always nice to see the beginning of something.

    Jeroen,

I'm glad to hear that you like my thougths on various movies. πŸ™‚

But I'm sorry, Katie Holmes looks like a doll that was in a car accident…

  • I just googled to see who Katie Holmes is and she looks cute enough to me?

Not as classy as Tom's ex, Nicole Kidman

Batman is my favourite superhero, though technically he's not 'super' being 'just a man' – but that's exactly why I like the character so much.

I've always preferred the graphic novels (e.g. The Killing Joke or Arkham Asylum) to any of the movies, I'll be interested to see *Begins*, but don't expect it to be dark enough for my liking.

  • Robert Nyman says:

    Steve,

To me Katie looks somewhat askew…

I think you'll like Batman Begins then. But if you want a dark movie, you should really watch Sin City.

  • andr3 says:

I agree, Katie Holmes was "miscasted", but i still find her cute, although not suitable for this role.

Christian Bale makes up for that, with a breathtaking performance. Didn't you feel this was the scariest of all the Batmans (batmen?)? I love the line where he says:

Bats frighten me. It's time my enemies share my dread.

Robert, I've really enjoyed all your reviews so far, however, I have no problems if they get a bit longer. πŸ˜‰

  • andr3 – I’ll second that – bit longer reviews please Robert πŸ™‚

  • Robert Nyman says:

    andr3,

Yes, I really like Christian Bale's performance, and the ambience of the movie is great! And no, Katie Holmes isn't cute… πŸ™‚

    Andr3 and Steve,

I'm happy to hear that, especially since one guy last night, when we were a fairly big company out for dinner with a friend, told me to stop with the movie reviews and focus more on <acronym title="Cascading Style Sheets">CSS</acronym>. Perhaps I should try and make the movie reviews longer… πŸ™‚

  • I would be disappointed if you chose to stop making CSS posts, but I think there’s scope for diversity too. Being a huge movie fan (fan of story telling in general if I’m honest) maybe I’m biased…

But, one of the reasons I like reading Bryan Veloso’s Avalonstar blog is you never know what you’re going to get… Maybe I’m in the minority, but I enjoy the odd off-topic post to break up the HTML/CSS/Accessibility/Marketing round-up πŸ™‚

  • andr3 says:

haha seems like your mind is pretty much set in terms of cuteness of katie holmes. no problem. we all have our preferences. πŸ˜‰

I second what Steve just said — ah! now it’s my turn. πŸ˜›

Although i really enjoy your posts about CSS and other issues related to the web, i think a blog needs to be authentic. Above all else, it should be a mirror of yourself. If you like talking about movies, do so. You’ll see there are people who prefer the CSS posts, the ones who would prefer if you stick to movie reviews (you never know, not everyone’s into css) and people who like both. I’m sure they won’t leave just because you write about movies. If you stop posting about CSS or other web issues, then they might leave, but i’m sure you won’t do that.

One thing doesn’t rule out the other. πŸ˜‰

  • Robert Nyman says:

    Steve, andr3,

Thank you! Your opinion is a mirror of my approach to writing: if I like something, I write about it. I believe the writing is better when it’s about something I feel strongly about for the moment. Not just writing a post for the sake of it.

And I also find it important to mix it with the web developing posts; CSS and all is great fun, but it’s very far from a 100% of my life and my persona. However, I don’t think I’ll ever stop writing about web developing all in all (at least not for a very foreseeable future), but I really do enjoy blending it with other things.

haha seems like your mind is pretty much set in terms of cuteness of katie holmes. no problem.

    Definitely! πŸ™‚

  • christianbale fans says:

Katie Holmes is gross! She is crooked- in her face (her mouth and eyes) and her performance. She is far from cute, infact she bothered the living hell outta me the entire movie I almost didn't want to give the rest of the fantastic film a chance. All because of her! Eewww. Give me a break, I hope SHE DOESN'T GET CAST IN THE NEXT BATMAN SEQUEL.

  • Robert Nyman says:

    christianbale fans,

Good to see that you share my opinion! πŸ™‚

  • Sasha says:

It was a real comeback for the Dark Knight w/ lots of humanity.

All the cast were great even in sidekick roles and Bale is the best Batman. Katie sizzles with Bale and is the real heroine who sheds the

heart of Batman making him likable to the audience.

At least she's not the typical weak screaming female or the modeling bombshell in superhero movies esp the past cartoonish Batman films.

  • Robert Nyman says:

    Sasha,

While I really liked the move, I guess my personal opinion about Katie is apparent above… πŸ™‚
